About my digital paintings & photography

I believe the art of digital photography is more than printing and displaying a photograph. I feel the imagery can go beyond the recorded subject and take on a new dimension of its own. It is not my intention to accurately represent what was in front of the camera. Digital capture is only the beginning of my artistic exploration of a subject. Digital manipulation of an image, perhaps in combination with other images, is an artistic process that reaches to expressly accentuate the beauty I see in the image.

About my functional art

I became interested in woodworking as a young boy growing up in south east Asia. One summer, my mother hired a master woodworker to build custom cabinets for our home. I asked him if I could watch him work. He invited me to watch - and even help! That's when I fell in love with woodworking.

When we migrated to the United States at the age of 18, I put my woodworking passions on hold so I could support my mom and younger siblings. I worked full time in a warehouse during the day and went to school at night to earn my bachelors degree in Computer Science. As the years passed I supported my family both as a computer programmer and a regular handyman. I built simple shelves, renovated bathrooms, installed hardwood floors and did other household improvement jobs.

One night while watching Modern Masters on HGTV, I felt inspired to take my woodworking to a much higher, creative level. My wife, Angie, encouraged me to follow my heart. Without her support I might not have had the courage to follow my dream.

I am mostly a self-taught woodworker, learning from books and from trial and error. As a woodworker, the shapes that interest me are abstract, contemporary, and organic. My designs are simple in form with crisp features that allow the patterns and colors in the wood to speak for themselves. Each piece is uniquely handcrafted from start to finish - the cutting, shaping, and sanding entirely controlled by hand and eye.
